Dehradun: Five Arrested In Tripura Student Death
Assault Near Liquor Shop Turns Fatal
A 24-year-old student from Tripura died in Uttarakhandโs Dehradun days after an alleged assault near a liquor shop in the Selaqui area. Police confirmed that the victim, Angel Chakma, suffered serious injuries during the attack and died on December 26 after battling for life for nearly two weeks.
The incident took place on the night of December 9 near a canteen located close to the liquor outlet. Angel had gone there with his brother Michael Chakma when a heated argument broke out with another group.
Alleged Racial Abuse and Violent Attack
According to police, the argument escalated quickly. Michael Chakma told investigators that the attackers appeared drunk and used racial slurs during the altercation. The group allegedly assaulted Angel with a sharp object and a metal bracelet, locally known as a kadaa.
Police said Angel suffered severe injuries to his head and back. He collapsed at the spot and was rushed to hospital. Despite treatment, his condition worsened, and he later succumbed to his injuries.
Five Accused Arrested, Two Are Juveniles
Uttarakhand Police arrested five accused in connection with the case. Two of them are juveniles and have been sent to a correction home. The remaining three โ identified as Avinash Negi, Suraj Khawas, and Sumit โ have been sent to judicial custody.
Police also formed a special team to trace and arrest the prime suspect, who is reportedly a Nepal national living in Haridwar.
A case has been registered under relevant sections, and further investigation is underway.
Political Reaction From Tripura
Angel Chakmaโs death triggered strong reactions in Tripura. BJP Tripura state general secretary Bipin Debbarma called the incident deeply saddening and assured justice.
He said the Chief Minister of Tripura Manik Saha has spoken with the Chief Minister of Uttarakhand Pushkar Dhami regarding the case. Authorities from both states are in touch to ensure strict action against those involved.
Investigation Continues
Senior police officials said they are examining all angles, including the role of alcohol consumption and the alleged use of racial slurs. Police stressed that no accused involved in the violence would be spared.
The case has once again raised concerns over safety, racial abuse, and violence against students from the Northeast in other parts of the country.
