Tragedy Strikes During New Year Celebrations
A major tragedy unfolded in the Swiss Alps during New Year celebrations after a fire broke out at a crowded bar, leaving “several tens of people” feared dead and around 100 others injured, many of them critically.
Swiss police confirmed the incident on Wednesday but said exact casualty numbers were still being verified.

The fire occurred at a bar named Le Constellation, where revellers had gathered to welcome the New Year. Authorities said people from several countries were among those affected, highlighting the international nature of the tourist crowd in the region.
Emergency Services Overwhelmed
Emergency responders rushed to the scene as helicopters and ambulances transported victims to nearby medical facilities. Valais Cantonal Police commander Frederic Gisler described the situation as heartbreaking.
“We are devastated,” Gisler told reporters, adding that rescue and identification efforts were ongoing.

The scale of injuries quickly overwhelmed local healthcare facilities. Regional councillor Mathias Rénard said the intensive care unit and operating theatres at the regional hospital reached full capacity within a short time.
Authorities Urge Public Caution
With medical resources stretched to their limits, authorities urged residents and tourists to act with caution in the coming days. The region is currently crowded with winter tourists, many of whom are visiting for skiing and holiday celebrations.
Officials warned that even minor accidents could place additional strain on emergency services that are already under severe pressure.
Popular Alpine Destination
The affected community lies in the heart of the Swiss Alps, around 40 kilometres north of the iconic Matterhorn and approximately 130 kilometres south of Zurich.

The area is part of Crans-Montana, a well-known mountain destination with about 10,000 residents.
The highest point of Crans-Montana reaches nearly 3,000 metres above sea level, making it a major draw for winter sports enthusiasts.
Ongoing Investigation
Authorities have not yet disclosed the cause of the fire. Investigators are working to determine how the blaze started and whether safety lapses played a role.
Officials said more information would be shared once rescue operations and initial assessments are complete.
As the Alpine community mourns, the incident has cast a shadow over New Year celebrations and raised urgent questions about safety at crowded tourist venues.
