Senior Congress leader and MP Shashi Tharoor has come out in support of Digvijaya Singh’s call for internal reforms in the party, saying the organisation must be strengthened to meet political challenges. His remarks come amid a fresh controversy triggered by Singh’s recent social media post.

Tharoor Endorses Need for Party Reforms

Speaking to reporters, Tharoor said the Congress needs organisational strengthening and cannot ignore internal concerns. He described his relationship with Digvijaya Singh as cordial and natural.
“We are friends, and having a conversation is natural. The organisation must be strengthened—there is no question about it,” Tharoor said.

His statement signals growing agreement among senior leaders on the need for reforms, even as the party faces repeated criticism over its internal functioning.

Digvijaya Singh’s Post Sparks Row

The controversy began after Digvijaya Singh shared a black-and-white photo from the 1990s showing Prime Minister Narendra Modi sitting on the floor near BJP veteran LK Advani. In his post, Singh praised the BJP-RSS structure for allowing grassroots workers to rise to top positions such as chief minister and prime minister.

The post drew sharp reactions from within political circles. Many Congress leaders felt the comparison handed ammunition to the BJP, which has often targeted the Congress over internal democracy.

Clarification Fails to Calm Political Storm

Singh later clarified that he only praised organisational discipline and remained a firm opponent of the BJP and the RSS. However, the clarification did little to contain the controversy. The post also revived attention on his earlier remarks, where he openly called for decentralisation of power within the Congress and tagged Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi.

That earlier message highlighted Singh’s concern over decision-making being concentrated at the top, a point echoed by several leaders in recent months.

Congress Faces Renewed Debate on Structure

Tharoor’s support has added weight to the internal debate. While he avoided direct criticism of the leadership, his remarks underline a shared belief that the party must evolve and empower its organisational units.

The episode has again exposed fault lines within the Congress, especially as the party seeks revival after recent electoral setbacks. Calls for decentralisation, internal elections, and stronger state units have surfaced repeatedly.

As the leadership weighs its next steps, Singh’s remarks and Tharoor’s backing reflect a broader demand from within the party: reform the organisation or risk further erosion of political ground.
