“Can’t Read a Man’s Mind Either”: Ramya’s Sharp Take on Stray Dogs Case
Actor and former MP Divya Spandana, popularly known as Ramya, has triggered a strong public reaction after commenting on the Supreme Court’s hearing related to stray dogs. Her remark came in response to an observation made by the apex court on the difficulty of assessing a dog’s mood.
The comment quickly spread on social media, adding a gendered and political dimension to an already sensitive civic issue involving public safety, animal welfare, and governance.
What the SC Said During the Hearing
The remarks that drew Ramya’s response emerged during a hearing before the Supreme Court of India on the menace of stray dogs and cattle in public places. A three-judge bench comprising Justices Vikram Nath, Sandeep Mehta, and NV Anjaria heard petitions challenging earlier directions on removing stray dogs from public institutions.
Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for the petitioners, argued that dogs attack humans when their space is violated and that empathy toward animals can prevent such incidents. Justice Vikram Nath responded that the issue extended beyond actual bites to the constant threat posed by stray dogs. He remarked that people cannot determine a dog’s mood at any given time, especially early in the morning.
Ramya’s Sharp Reaction on Social Media
Reacting to this observation, Ramya posted an Instagram story that immediately drew attention. She questioned the logic by comparing it to human behavior, stating that one cannot read a man’s mind either or predict when he might commit serious crimes. Her rhetorical remark suggested that uncertainty alone cannot justify sweeping actions against an entire group.
Though brief, the comment sparked widespread discussion, with supporters calling it a bold critique and critics accusing her of making an insensitive comparison.
A Pattern of Speaking Out on Social Issues
This incident does not mark the first time Ramya has taken a strong public stand. She has often voiced opinions on social justice, civic responsibility, and rule of law. Earlier, she became a focal point of controversy during the Renukaswamy murder case after reacting to actor Darshan’s arrest. At the time, she stressed that no individual stands above the law and criticized the idea of taking justice into one’s own hands.
She also demanded justice for the victim’s family and urged faith in legal processes, even while acknowledging public skepticism about outcomes.
Threats Following Her Statements
Ramya’s outspoken views have previously attracted severe backlash. After her remarks on the murder case, she reportedly received rape and death threats online. She later approached the Bengaluru police and filed complaints against dozens of social media accounts. Authorities confirmed multiple arrests in connection with the threats, highlighting the risks faced by public figures who speak on contentious issues.

Protests Continue Over Stray Dogs Order
Meanwhile, the stray dogs issue continues to trigger protests across the country. Demonstrations have taken place in several cities, including a recent gathering at Jantar Mantar in Delhi. Protesters opposed the Supreme Court’s directive to remove stray dogs from places such as hospitals, schools, bus stands, and railway stations and relocate them to shelters after sterilisation and vaccination.
The protest saw participation from musicians Mohit Chauhan and Rahul Ram, who performed to support the cause. Activists argued that civic bodies like the Municipal Corporation of Delhi failed to manage vaccination and sterilisation programs and unfairly placed the burden on animals.
Ramya’s remark has added a new layer to the stray dogs debate, blending questions of safety, empathy, governance, and gender. As protests continue and legal proceedings evolve, the issue remains a flashpoint that reflects deeper tensions in urban civic life and public discourse.
