After Uttar Pradesh, Another State Makes Newspaper Reading Mandatory in Government Schools
Daily Newspaper Reading During Morning Assembly
Close on the heels of Uttar Pradesh government mandating newspaper reading in schools, the Rajasthan government has also made newspaper reading compulsory in all government schools to strengthen reading habits and improve general awareness among students.
According to an official order dated December 31, students will now spend at least 10 minutes reading newspapers during the morning assembly every school day.

The initiative aims to help students understand current affairs, expand their vocabulary, and develop critical thinking skills from an early age. Education officials believe regular exposure to news will improve students’ ability to analyse events and express their views clearly.
Subscription Rules for Schools
As per the directive issued by the state’s school education department, government senior secondary schools and English-medium schools must subscribe to at least two newspapers. These include one Hindi newspaper and one English newspaper. Government upper primary schools are required to ensure the availability of a minimum of two Hindi newspapers.
The Rajasthan School Education Council, Jaipur, will bear the cost of newspaper subscriptions so that schools do not face any financial burden while implementing the programme.
Focus on Vocabulary and Discussion
Schools have been instructed to identify five new words from newspapers every day. Teachers will explain their meanings to students to strengthen language and comprehension skills.

During morning assemblies, students will read aloud one national-level Hindi newspaper and one English newspaper.
Students will also be divided class-wise and encouraged to read editorials and discuss major national, international, and sports news. This practice is expected to boost confidence, communication skills, and awareness of social and global issues.
Preparing Students for Competitive Exams
Officials said the programme is designed to improve general knowledge and help students prepare better for competitive examinations in the future. The move follows a similar decision by the Uttar Pradesh government, which recently introduced mandatory newspaper reading in its government schools.
