Rahul Gandhi Warns of Threat to Indian Democracy

Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, has flagged threat to Indian democracy, accusing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of attempting to weaken and eliminate the Indian Constitution. He claimed that the ruling party was attacking the core idea of equality that gave all citizens equal rights, regardless of religion, language, or region.

Speaking at the Hertie School in Berlin last week, Rahul Gandhi said the Constitution guarantees equal value to every individual, and any move to dilute it is a threat to Indian democracy. According to him, the BJP’s approach threatens the balance between states, languages, and religions that holds the country together.

“India’s Democracy Is a Global Asset”

In an hour-long video released by the Congress party on Monday, December 22, 2025, Rahul Gandhi said that India was the world’s largest and most complex democracy. He described Indian democracy not only as a national strength but also as a global public good.

He warned that any attack on India’s democratic system affected democratic values worldwide. Rahul Gandhi said global discussions on democracy couldn’t ignore India, given its size, diversity, and democratic history.

Opposition Must Build a System of Resistance

During his interaction with students, Rahul Gandhi stressed that the Opposition cannot limit itself to complaining about election problems. Instead, it must actively create a strong and effective system of resistance.

He said the Opposition’s fight was not just against the BJP as a political party but against what he described as the capture of India’s institutional structure. According to him, institutions were being used to strengthen political power rather than serve the nation.

Allegations of Institutional Capture

Rahul Gandhi alleged that several key institutions in India had been compromised. He claimed there was widespread “weaponisation” of institutions that were meant to function independently.

He also raised concerns about the electoral machinery, saying the Congress believed there were serious issues with how elections were being conducted. Along with this, he accused the ruling party of controlling institutions which were supposed to act impartially.

Concerns Over Fairness of Elections

The Congress leader claimed that his party clearly won the Haryana election and questioned the fairness of the Maharashtra election. He said the Congress does not believe the Maharashtra polls were conducted in a fair manner.

According to him, democracy cannot survive if institutions and elections lose public trust. He added that the Opposition will continue to highlight these issues and work towards restoring democratic balance.

Criticism of Enforcement Agencies

Rahul Gandhi also criticised central agencies such as the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED). He said these institutions were built by earlier governments to serve the country, not any one political party.

He alleged that these agencies are now being used selectively, which has created fear and weakened democratic accountability.

India’s Unity Built on the Constitution

Comparing India with Europe, Rahul Gandhi said that while European nations took decades to form a union, India achieved political and economic unity in 1947. This unity, he said, was made possible by the Constitution.

He concluded by saying that protecting constitutional values is essential for India’s future and for the health of democracy across the world.
