Mohd Shami Asked to Appear for SIR Verification in Kolkata

Indian cricketer Mohammed Shami was asked to appear for a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) verification hearing in Kolkata, officials said on Tuesday.

The hearing is part of routine voter verification carried out by the election authorities.

Shami was called along with his brother Mohammed Kaif to attend the hearing at a school in the Jadavpur area on Monday.

Cricketer Misses Hearing Due to Match Commitments

Officials said Shami could not attend the hearing as he is currently in Rajkot, where he is representing Bengal in the Vijay Hazare Trophy.

After informing the authorities about his unavailability, Shami requested fresh dates for the verification. The Election Commission accepted the request and rescheduled the hearing between January 9 and 11.

Error in Enumeration Form Led to Hearing

An official from the office of the Chief Electoral Officer said the hearing was required due to an error in the Enumeration Form.

According to the official, the form submitted by Shami and his brother was incorrectly filled out, prompting election authorities to call them for verification.

Registered Voter in Rashbehari Constituency

Shami is a registered voter of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation ward 93, which falls under the Rashbehari Assembly constituency.

Although he originally hails from Uttar Pradesh, the pacer has been living in Kolkata for several years because of his cricketing career.

Cricketing Roots in Bengal

Shami moved to Kolkata at a young age and trained under former Bengal Ranji captain Sambaran Bandyopadhyay.

Under his guidance, Shami earned selection in the Bengal under-22 team, which became a turning point in his career.

He later went on to establish himself as one of India’s leading fast bowlers across formats.

Election Authorities Clarify Process

Election officials stressed that the hearing is a standard verification procedure and does not involve any wrongdoing.

They said the matter will be resolved once Shami appears on the rescheduled dates and completes the formalities.
