Man Dies by Suicide in Nagpur Days After Wife’s Death In Bengaluru, Mother Critical
A tragic chain of events spanning two states has left a family shattered after a 36-year-old man died by suicide in Maharashtra’s Nagpur, just days after his wife’s death in Bengaluru. His mother, who accompanied him on the journey, also attempted suicide and remains in critical condition, police said on Saturday.
The deceased has been identified as Suraj Shivanna, a Bengaluru resident who travelled more than a thousand kilometres to Nagpur with his mother, Jayanti, following mounting personal and legal pressure after his wife’s death.
Death Occurred at Nagpur Hotel
Police said Suraj was found hanging from a ceiling fan inside a hotel room on Wardha Road in Nagpur. The incident came to light after Suraj’s brother, Sanjay Shivanna, informed local police about the suicide attempt.
Emergency services rushed Jayanti to a nearby hospital after she also attempted suicide. Doctors described her condition as critical, and she continues to receive intensive medical care.
Suraj’s body has been sent for a post-mortem examination to establish the exact cause of death.
Wife’s Death Triggered Police Case in Bengaluru
Suraj’s death comes just two days after his wife, Ganavi, died by suicide in Bengaluru. The couple had married on October 29 and had recently returned from a shortened honeymoon trip to Sri Lanka following marital discord.
According to Ganavi’s family, she faced emotional distress after returning to Bengaluru. They claimed she experienced rejection and humiliation from her in-laws, prompting them to bring her back to her parental home.
Ganavi Declared Brain Dead Before Death
On Tuesday, Ganavi allegedly attempted suicide and was rushed to a hospital in Bengaluru. Doctors later declared her brain dead, and she was kept on ventilator support for two days before passing away on Thursday.
Following her death, Ganavi’s parents filed a complaint accusing Suraj and his family members of dowry harassment. Based on the complaint, Bengaluru police registered a case alleging that Suraj had abetted his wife’s suicide.
Protests and Public Backlash
After the complaint was filed, Ganavi’s family and relatives staged a protest outside her in-laws’ residence, demanding immediate arrests. The protest and public scrutiny reportedly intensified pressure on Suraj and his family.
Police sources said Suraj and his mother left Bengaluru soon after the protest and travelled to Nagpur, possibly to escape escalating tension and public backlash.
Investigation Ongoing in Two States
Nagpur Police have confirmed that Suraj’s brother alerted them about the suicide attempt. Authorities are coordinating with Bengaluru Police, who continue to investigate the allegations related to Ganavi’s death.
Officials said both cases will be examined independently, though investigators are also looking at the sequence of events linking the two deaths.
Family Left Devastated
The double tragedy has left both families in deep shock. While Suraj’s relatives await post-mortem results, Ganavi’s family continues to seek justice for her death.
Police have not yet made arrests in the Bengaluru case, stating that further investigation and evidence collection are underway.
A Grim Reminder of Mental Health Crisis
The incident highlights the devastating impact of unresolved domestic disputes, legal pressure, and emotional trauma. Authorities have urged individuals facing distress to seek help and support rather than suffer in silence.
If you or someone you know is struggling, mental health professionals stress the importance of reaching out to trusted family members, counsellors, or helplines.
