Army Steps Up Anti-Terror Operations in Jammu Region During Chillai Kalan
The Indian Army has intensified counter-terror operations in the Kishtwar and Doda districts of Jammu and Kashmir as the region experiences Chillai Kalan, the harshest phase of winter.
Army units have moved into higher and snowbound areas to track and eliminate Pakistani terrorists who are attempting to use the extreme cold and difficult terrain to evade security forces, official sources said.
Intelligence Flags Terror Presence in Jammu
According to intelligence assessments, around 30 to 35 Pakistani terrorists are currently active in the Jammu region. Security agencies believe that sustained counter-terror operations over the past months have forced these groups to retreat into upper and middle mountain ranges.
These areas remain largely deserted during winter, allowing terrorists to set up temporary hideouts. Officials said the groups are trying to survive the winter while avoiding direct encounters with troops.
Army Adopts Proactive Winter Strategy
Despite heavy snowfall and freezing temperatures, the Army has adopted a proactive winter posture. Troops have established temporary bases and surveillance posts in remote, snow-covered locations.
Regular patrols and area domination exercises continue to prevent terrorists from regrouping or moving freely. The aim is to maintain constant pressure throughout the winter months.
Joint Operations with Security Agencies
This year’s operations follow an integrated approach. The Army is working closely with the Jammu and Kashmir Police, CRPF, Special Operations Group, civil administration, Forest Guards, and Village Defence Guards.
This coordination ensures real-time intelligence sharing and quicker response. Once inputs are verified, joint teams launch targeted operations with clear tasking for each unit.
Clear Focus on Surveillance and Swift Action
Security forces are following a defined operational model — continuous surveillance, swift action, and renewed monitoring. This approach reduces the chances of terrorists escaping or regrouping after an operation.
Officials said the system allows forces to act immediately on actionable intelligence, even in extreme winter conditions.
Terrorist Support Base Weakens
Sources said terrorists are attempting to threaten villagers for food and shelter, but local support has declined sharply. Increased vigilance and community cooperation have weakened overground networks.
As a result, terrorist groups remain isolated and under constant watch.
Special Winter Warfare Units Deployed
The Army has also deployed specialised winter warfare units trained in snow survival, high-altitude combat, and avalanche response. These troops ensure operational effectiveness during Chillai Kalan, when most mountain activity comes to a halt.
Security forces said operations will continue through the winter to deny terrorists any seasonal advantage.
