School Teacher Shot Dead Inside AMU Campus
A shocking incident has raised serious security concerns after a school teacher was shot dead inside the campus of Aligarh Muslim University in Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday night.
The victim, Danish Rao, had served as a computer science teacher at ABK High School on the AMU campus for the past 11 years. His murder near one of the busiest academic zones has sent shockwaves across the university community.
Attack Took Place During Evening Walk
The incident occurred around 8:50 pm, when Danish Rao stepped out for an evening walk with two of his colleagues. As the trio walked near the university’s central library, two men arrived on a scooter and stopped in front of them.
According to preliminary accounts, the attackers threatened the group with pistols. One of the gunmen allegedly addressed Rao directly and said, “You don’t know me yet, now you will.” Moments later, both assailants opened fire.
Shot Multiple Times, Including in the Head
Police officials confirmed that Danish Rao was shot at least three times, with two bullets hitting his head. The attackers fled the scene immediately after the shooting, leaving Rao critically injured on the road.
Colleagues and bystanders rushed him to the Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, located within the campus. Doctors declared him dead on arrival.
Police Launch Manhunt, CCTV Footage Under Review
Senior Superintendent of Police Neeraj Jadon confirmed that both attackers fired at Rao. He said the police have formed six special teams to investigate the case.
“These teams are reviewing CCTV footage from inside and outside the campus to identify the shooters and trace their escape route,” a senior police officer said.
Police are also questioning witnesses, including Rao’s colleagues who were present at the scene, to reconstruct the sequence of events and establish the motive behind the killing.
University Authorities React
AMU Proctor Mohd Wasim Ali confirmed the incident and described it as deeply disturbing. “Around 9 pm, we received information that a man had been shot near the library and was being taken for treatment. We later learned that the victim was Danish Rao, a teacher at ABK School. He was shot in the head and succumbed to his injuries at the medical college,” he told reporters.
University authorities have tightened security on campus and assured students and staff that they are cooperating fully with the police investigation.
Fear and Anger on Campus
The killing has triggered fear and outrage among teachers, students, and staff members. Many questioned how armed assailants managed to enter the campus and execute a targeted attack in a high-security academic environment.
Faculty members described Rao as a dedicated teacher with no known history of disputes. “He was calm, professional, and respected by students and colleagues alike,” said one senior faculty member.
Murder Sparks Political Questions
The murder came just hours after Yogi Adityanath spoke in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly about improved law and order in the state.
Addressing legislators earlier in the day, the Chief Minister had said, “An atmosphere of security is essential for every person. Today, every person can say that investment is coming to Uttar Pradesh because of the improved security environment.”
The timing of the killing has led to sharp criticism from opposition leaders, who argue that violent crimes continue despite government claims of enhanced public safety.
Investigation Focuses on Motive
Police have not yet disclosed whether the murder was linked to personal enmity, professional rivalry, or any other dispute. Investigators are examining Rao’s personal and professional background to determine whether he had received threats in the past.
Officials said the investigation remains at an early stage, and arrests are expected once the assailants are identified.
Campus Security Under Scrutiny
The killing has once again brought campus security arrangements under the spotlight. Students have demanded increased patrolling, better lighting, and stricter entry checks to prevent similar incidents in the future.
As the investigation continues, Danish Rao’s death stands as a grim reminder of the vulnerability of public spaces and the urgent need for effective security measures.
