Aadhaar–PAN Linking Deadline Near: What Happens If You Miss December 31, 2025
With the December 31, 2025 deadline fast approaching, the Income Tax Department has once again reminded taxpayers to complete the Aadhaar–PAN linking process. Failure to do so will render an unlinked PAN card inoperative, affecting several financial and tax-related activities. In addition, a late fee of ₹1,000 will apply for those who delay the process.
The Aadhaar–PAN linkage is mandatory for most existing PAN holders and plays a critical role in ensuring transparency, preventing duplication, and strengthening India’s tax compliance system.
Aadhaar–PAN Linking Deadline and Late Fee Explained
The government has fixed December 31, 2025 as the final date to link Aadhaar with PAN. PAN cards that remain unlinked after this date will stop functioning for official use.
Taxpayers who attempt to link their PAN and Aadhaar after the deadline will first need to pay a penalty of ₹1,000 before completing the process. This fee is mandatory and non-refundable.
Once a PAN becomes inoperative, individuals may face issues while filing income tax returns, opening bank accounts, completing high-value transactions, or receiving tax refunds.
How to Link Aadhaar With PAN Card Online
The Aadhaar–PAN linking process is fully online and can be completed through the Income Tax Department’s e-filing portal. Here’s how:
Visit the official income tax e-filing portal and log in using your credentials.
Navigate to the Profile section and select the ‘Link Aadhaar’ option.
Enter your PAN and Aadhaar numbers carefully.
Proceed to ‘Pay through e-Pay Tax’ if a fee is applicable.
Choose the relevant assessment year and select ‘Other Receipts’ as the payment type.
Complete the payment via net banking, debit card, or other available options.
After successful payment, return to the portal to complete the Aadhaar–PAN linking.
Once linked, users should download or save the confirmation for future reference.
How to Check Aadhaar–PAN Linking Status: To verify whether your Aadhaar and PAN are already linked:
- Visit the income tax e-filing portal
- Click on ‘Link Aadhaar Status’
- Enter your PAN and Aadhaar details
- Submit the request
- The system will display whether the linking is complete or pending.
What to Do in Case of Errors or Mismatch
Many users face issues due to mismatched personal details such as name, date of birth, or gender. In such cases:
Visit the UIDAI portal to update Aadhaar details
- Visit UTIITSL or Protean (NSDL) to correct PAN information
- After corrections, retry the linking process
- If your Aadhaar is mistakenly linked to another PAN, you must contact your Jurisdictional Assessing Officer and submit a formal request for delinking.
New PAN Applicants: Aadhaar Verification Mandatory
For individuals applying for a new PAN card, Aadhaar-based verification has already been made mandatory at the application stage. This policy eliminates the need for separate Aadhaar–PAN linking later and ensures immediate compliance.
Why You Should Not Delay Aadhaar–PAN Linking
Delaying Aadhaar–PAN linking can disrupt essential services such as banking, investments, tax filings, and salary processing. Completing the process well before the deadline helps avoid penalties, last-minute technical issues, and unnecessary stress.
