Students from India’s northeast organised a candlelight march in Dehradun on Wednesday to protest the killing of Angel Chakma, a 24-year-old student from Tripura.

The protesters demanded justice and raised concerns over alleged racial discrimination.

The march was led by students studying in Dehradun and was supported by peers from other states.

Protest Organised by Tripura Students’ Body

The protest was organised under the banner of the Unified Tripura Students Association (UTSA). Students gathered outside Gandhi Park and marched towards Ghantaghar (Clock Tower) while holding candles.

Several students carried placards with Angel Chakma’s photograph. They raised slogans such as “Stop Racism,” “We Are Indians,” and “We Want Justice.” The peaceful march drew attention from passers-by in the busy city centre.

Allegations Against Police Handling

Churanta Tripura, general secretary of UTSA’s Dehradun unit, alleged that the police were trying to downplay the case. He claimed the authorities were reluctant to recognise the incident as racially motivated.

He also said the police asked students to stop the march, citing traffic issues due to New Year celebrations. According to him, students felt their concerns were being ignored.

Details of the Incident

Angel Chakma was a final-year MBA student at a private university in Dehradun. He was allegedly attacked on December 9 by a group of youths.

The attackers reportedly used a knife and a brass knuckle. Chakma suffered serious injuries and was hospitalised for 17 days. He succumbed to his injuries on December 26.

Police Deny Racial Angle

While Chakma’s family and fellow students claim racist remarks led to the attack, the Dehradun police have denied finding any evidence of racial discrimination so far.

Senior Superintendent of Police Ajay Singh said students from across India study in Dehradun. He noted that over 2,000 students from the northeast, including around 250 from Tripura, are enrolled in institutions across the city.

The investigation is ongoing.
