Woman Allegedly Killed Over Dowry Demand in Palghar, Husband and Sister-in-Law Arrested
A shocking case of domestic violence has emerged from Palghar district in Maharashtra, where a 35-year-old woman was allegedly murdered by her husband and sister-in-law following a dispute over dowry. Police confirmed on Sunday that they have arrested both accused and launched a detailed investigation into the incident.
The crime occurred in the MB Estate area of Virar West, where the victim lived with her husband and in-laws.
Argument Over Dowry Escalated Into Violence
According to police, the victim, Kalpana Soni, got into a heated argument with her husband on Saturday. During the altercation, Kalpana reportedly demanded the return of the dowry she had brought into the marriage and expressed her intention to leave the house.
Senior Inspector Prakash Kawale of Bolinj police station said the demand triggered a violent response.
“After her demand, Mahesh Soni and his sister Deepali Soni allegedly attacked Kalpana on the head with a sharp weapon,” the officer said.
Neighbours Rushed Victim to Hospital
Hearing screams from the house, neighbours rushed inside and found Kalpana critically injured. They immediately shifted her to a nearby hospital for treatment. Doctors, however, declared her dead on arrival.
The post-mortem examination revealed that Kalpana suffered severe head injuries caused by forceful assault, ruling out any possibility of accidental death.
Accused Tried to Mislead Police
In an apparent attempt to mislead investigators, the accused initially told police that Kalpana had slipped and fallen in the washroom, leading to her death.
Medical findings contradicted this version. Doctors confirmed that the injuries were consistent with violent assault and not a fall.
Following the medical report, police intensified questioning of the family members.
Child Was Not Present at Home
Police said the couple’s seven-year-old daughter was not at home at the time of the incident. She was reportedly staying with relatives, which spared her from witnessing the violence.
Authorities are now ensuring that the child receives proper care and counselling, officials said.
Case Registered After Relative’s Complaint
Based on a complaint filed by Kalpana’s maternal uncle, police registered a case of murder against Mahesh Soni and Deepali Soni.
Both accused were arrested shortly after the complaint was lodged. Investigators seized the suspected weapon and other evidence from the house.
Court Sends Accused to Police Custody
A local court has remanded the accused to seven days of police custody to allow investigators to gather further evidence, reconstruct the sequence of events, and examine possible prior instances of harassment.
Inspector Kawale said police are probing whether Kalpana had faced earlier abuse or pressure related to dowry.
Dowry-Related Violence Remains a Concern
The case has once again highlighted the persistent issue of dowry-related violence in India, despite strict legal provisions against it.
Police officials urged families to report harassment early and encouraged neighbours and relatives to intervene when they suspect domestic abuse.
Investigation Ongoing
Authorities said the investigation remains ongoing, and additional charges may be added based on further findings.
Police are recording statements from neighbours and relatives to build a complete picture of the circumstances leading to Kalpana’s death. The incident has sent shockwaves through the local community, with residents demanding swift justice for the victim.
