Digvijaya Singh’s Reform Push Puts Congress Leadership in Spotlight Again
The Congress has once again found itself in an uncomfortable position after a senior leader openly questioned the party’s internal functioning. Rajya Sabha MP and former Madhya Pradesh chief minister Digvijaya Singh called for urgent reforms and said it is “not easy” to convince Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi.
His remarks came at a sensitive time and gave the BJP fresh grounds to attack the Congress leadership. The comments also highlighted the growing unease among senior leaders over how the party is being run.
Digvijaya Singh Flags Need for Reforms
Digvijaya Singh raised the issue of decentralisation in the Congress last week. In a social media post, he tagged Rahul Gandhi and praised him for his understanding of socio-economic issues. At the same time, Singh urged him to focus on internal party reforms.

Singh said the Congress needs a more pragmatic and decentralised structure. He added that while Gandhi has started working on organisational rebuilding, convincing him on reforms remains difficult. The post quickly drew attention within political circles.
Timing Adds to Party’s Discomfort
Singh’s remarks resurfaced on Friday, just before senior Congress leaders met for a Congress Working Committee meeting. The meeting was called to discuss the government’s decision to rename the MGNREGA scheme.
The public airing of concerns embarrassed the party leadership. It also underlined the growing frustration among leaders who believe their voices are not being heard within the organisation.
BJP Targets Congress Leadership
The BJP wasted no time in attacking the Congress. Party leaders said Rahul Gandhi often speaks about democracy in the country but fails to ensure democratic functioning within his own party.
The controversy gained more traction after Singh praised the organisational strength of the BJP and the RSS in another social media post. He shared an old photograph showing Prime Minister Narendra Modi sitting on the floor near senior BJP leader LK Advani during an event in the 1990s.
Praise for BJP Organisation Sparks Debate
In his post, Singh highlighted how grassroots workers in the RSS-BJP system can rise to the highest positions. He described this as the strength of a strong organisation. The post triggered sharp reactions within the Congress.
Singh later clarified that he only praised the organisational structure and not the ideology. He said he remains a strong critic of the BJP and the RSS. Congress sources also said the party would learn from its own history, not from rival organisations.
What Lies Behind the Reform Call
Singh’s remarks have sparked wider debate within the Congress. Many leaders believe his concerns reflect deeper issues. The party has suffered repeated electoral defeats in recent years, adding pressure for structural changes.

Singh has flagged that state-level leadership often fails to form committees after appointments. This weakens decentralisation and slows decision-making. He is also reportedly uncomfortable with leaders not aligned with him holding key posts in Madhya Pradesh.
Questions Over Political Future
Sources suggest Singh’s Rajya Sabha term ends early next year, and a third term appears unlikely. However, many believe his concerns go beyond personal ambition. Some point to the political future of his son, Jaivardhan Singh, as a factor.
At the same time, questions persist over key organisational roles. There are renewed calls to expand Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s role and review the long tenure of senior office-bearers.
The episode has once again exposed the Congress’s internal challenges and renewed calls for reform ahead of crucial political battles.
