US Embassy Warns Indian Visa Applicants Against Rising H-1B Scam Attempts
The United States Embassy in India has issued a strong public warning to visa applicants, urging them to stay alert amid a rise in visa-related scams. The advisory comes as delays in H-1B visa processing and renewals continue to leave many applicants stranded in India without confirmed travel plans.
Embassy Flags Growing Visa Fraud Cases
In an advisory shared on social media platform X, the US Embassy said scammers are exploiting the anxiety of applicants who cannot secure timely visa appointments. Many individuals claim to act as agents or intermediaries and promise guaranteed visas or faster approvals. The embassy made it clear that such claims are false.
Officials said these scams often result in financial losses, cancelled travel plans, and prolonged uncertainty for applicants. The embassy stressed that no one can guarantee a US visa or speed up the process through unofficial means.
Only Official Channels Are Valid
The embassy reiterated that applicants can obtain a US visa only through official government channels. All visa appointments must be booked via the authorised website, www.ustraveldocs.com. In a video message, embassy officials warned that anyone offering visas outside this system is attempting to cheat applicants.
The advisory underlined that visa decisions depend solely on individual eligibility and US immigration law. No external party has any influence over approvals or timelines.
Warning Against Agents and Fixers
Addressing the role of visa agents and travel facilitators, the embassy clarified that no agent, fixer, or agency can influence visa outcomes. Officials said some agents demand extra payments by promising early appointments or assured approvals. These promises have no legal basis.
The embassy advised applicants to pay only the official fees listed during the application process. Any demand for additional money should be treated as a red flag.
Rely Only on Trusted Government Sources
The embassy urged applicants to rely only on official government websites for accurate information. These include the US Department of State website travel.state.gov and the US Embassy in India visa page at in.usembassy.gov/visas.
Officials said misinformation spreads quickly through unofficial sources and social media groups. Such reliance increases the risk of fraud and confusion during an already stressful process.
Delays Hit H-1B Applicants Hard
The warning comes at a difficult time for Indian H-1B visa applicants and holders. Many face long waiting periods due to appointment shortages at US consulates. Several appointments were cancelled or postponed by months following recent policy changes by the US government.
The earlier lottery-based selection system has ended. The new process gives preference based on skill level and salary criteria. This shift has added to uncertainty and delays for applicants.
Indian Applicants Major Target for Scammers
Data from the US Citizenship and Immigration Services shows that Indian nationals account for nearly 71 percent of approved H-1B petitions in recent years. The embassy said this large share makes Indian applicants a prime target for scam networks during periods of delay.
Officials said the updated H-1B measures aim to reduce misuse of the programme while allowing US employers to hire skilled foreign workers for temporary roles.
The embassy advised applicants to remain patient, follow official guidance, and avoid anyone claiming to offer shortcuts. It said caution and awareness are the best tools to stay safe from visa fraud.
